Beacon Charter School for the Arts

Beacon Charter School For The Arts is different compared to public schools and also other charter schools, it has a mission to have its students benefit from its resources and be able to work on what they want to learn the most which this charter schools focuses on... which is ART. Many students that have decided to focus on art and be able to learn it early on, which would be a best place for a student to be able to enter this school to be able to focus more on art. Many students such as myself who already know that they want to have a career in art field would want to be a part of this school.

Beacon charter school is a high school for the arts that consists of having grades 9 through 12. Their main mission in this charter school is different from your normal school, it focuses on the arts and enhances artistic skills compared to public schools.Their mission stated in their website tells about how they want their students to be prepared with the academic skills necessary for post-secondary success. this schools is the best opinion for a student that is prepared and is certain that they want a career in the future that is art related.
  1. Art- Art such as drawing and painting is just one of the classes that focuses more and is able to have students be able to enhance artistic skills by having them learn drawing and painting but also be able to go deeper and be taught about composition and how to be able to present a piece
  2. Culinary- This is relating to preparing food. being able to prepare food and also know how to present them is an art and this schools helps students that are interested in cooking be able to learn how to cook and also be able to take it a step further by being taught how to present it to people.
  3. Drama- Theater is also given in this school and is for people that might not want to show what they make in a drawing way or presenting in what they make but as having them be a a form of art that is able to be an actor or even a designer for the backgrounds of plays.

Courses and Credit
Students are needed to be enrolled in 32 courses and be able to pass all 32 courses to be able to graduate and also on top of that the students must pass a portfolio review each year to complete a senior capstone project. These requirements are taken very seriously by students and teachers which determines if they are really deserving to be there and be able to achieve better effectiveness by being in that school. Also they must be able to be practically proficient in reading and math to be able to graduate and be able to continue on with there skills in a college level class.

Admission policy
Beacon is a public charter school in Rhode Island and to have a student enrolled to the school must find out an application that is on the website and after the admission process is made up of a lottery that picks out the 60 open seats freshmen year and the rest that did not get chosen would be put on a waiting list. Other than having 60 seats open in freshmen year all other years will have zero up to 10 seats open for enrollment.

Attendance rate
The attendance rate at Beacon recently in 2012-2013 is 91% compared to the statewide percentage which is 92%. also having the percentage of students attending school there is also the percentage of how many students graduate in 4 years after entering. Statewide the percentage is 77.1% graduate in 2012 and comparing it to Beacon High school where 90.5% of the students graduate in 4 years.

Test Scores comparison
In Beacon test scores in NECAP compared to Woonsocket high school show a difference. In the 11th grade Beacon of 2012-2013 had a 28% proficient rate in math while Woonsocket high school had 21% rate, in Reading Beacon had 91% rate as for Woonsocket had a 70% rate, in Writing Beacon had a 83% rate while Woonsocket had 34% rate, and in science Beacon got 27% rate while Woonsocket had 15% rate.

This Charter School is a very hard school to be able to attend not only by its random selection and only having 60 spots open in their freshmen year but to be able to stay after a year due to the fact that its portfolio reviews are hard to be able to show of what they have learned. To stay in this schools is hard but is most able for students that are able and committed to being there and learn. Charter schools compared to public schools have a big difference to begin with but Beacon is unique by having it be more focus on the arts while most public schools are having little funding in their art programs or even no funding in their art programs. I can tell by reading looking in Beacon that it has lots of resources compared to my school that had a small art class that was not a very good one and it did not make me be interested in it which i believe that art programs are a very necessary program to have in school. Beacon has lots of resources and the students work very hard and not just in the arts but also in the other subjects such as reading, writing, and math.
